Default Hand ranking question.

As we all know, when playing a pair of kings for example, the higher the kicker the better. But recently I was watching a rare thing happening. In a no limit game there came four 5's on the board. One of the remaining two opponents went all in and the other guy at once called, probably being the oppinion the pot would be splitted anyway. But then I read player A wins (the bettor) with quad 5's, Ace kicker. I suddenly realised I'd never thought about this and thought further: Is there also the same when both opponents have trips or two pair, is there also the kicker important? To say the truth, I can't remember a case when this happened as long as I remember.

Best regards
