To clear up the whole 95k a year thing... I talked to the guy again and he said that he makes that much bc he is sometimes called to deal at the higher limits 50-100 and above.

[/ QUOTE ]

Most dealers earn less at higher limits than lower limits. A decent number of high limit players tip ZERO. Some low limit players don't tip because they aren't familiar with casinos. Most dealers earn most of their money at the upper-lower and lower-middle limits (roughly 4/8 to 15-30).

[ QUOTE ]
He also suppliments his income with poker winnings (with which i imagine he is adding to his dealer pay to come up with 95k/yr)

[/ QUOTE ]

Well, then he doesn't earn 95k/yr. by dealing. Maybe that's not what he (or you) meant, but that's certainly what you implied.

Is it hard to become a dealer? I'll be 21 when i graduate from college and will look like an 18 year old. Is this going to be a problem?

I can't speak for Vegas or AC, but here in Colorado it isn't real easy to get in. There are many people applying for each position and you have to beat out these people at an audition.

Your looks, age, etc. shouldn't mean too much if you have the skills. I work with guys who look 18 and gals who are, well....not exactly slim or real attractive.

For a player, a bonus from this would be the opportunity to get lots of experience in reading tells and putting players on hands. This should help your game quite a bit and count as a big job perk.

Except a good dealer should be looking at other things...

Son, many good dealers, including myself, cab deal faster than you can act. Especially when your putting on the act. I instantly read thru this response as another player who thinks of dealers as "less than". Dont worry tho. Those players often times "get theirs" when a good dealer has the opportunity to do something technically correct and cost ya a pot. ie: your in the 10seat and ya set your cards down and he insta mucks them. After all you didnt have them "capped".

Seems like being a dealer is the perfect occupation if you enjoy taking shiite off total strangers for a living.

Good dealers in the right location can make a very nice living. Not "get rich", but a nice living anyways. It's highly dependent on your own skills, and most of all, location, location, location.

Unfortunately for 95% of the new dealers out there, they are not taught the most important aspects of dealing. Hell most floor people dont even know the #1 job of a dealer. It isnt to pitch cards, Games were self dealt by the players 30 yrs ago in California card rooms. It isnt to collect the rake, they had "time collectors" back then that came by every 1/2 hr.

Whats the NUMBER ONE job of a dealer? Anyone?

You needed your head examined before you decided to go to Vegas! Nothing different now. You'll be missed.

Excuse me? Just where did that come from? I was responding to someone who thought becoming a dealer would help one's poker game. Now I don't know about a veteran. But are you watching players during a hand trying to get a read? Or are you more focused on the action, cutting the pot, collecting dead cards? I assure you I do not think of dealers as 'less than', however I've seen enough to know that dealing is not so easy that you can just watch the game and learn how players play. Which is what the post I was responding to was talking about doing.
