Default Hidden Camera Investigations

I was just watching a Dateline NBC hidden camera special on guys who solicit minors over the internet. They would pose as a minor and invite the guy to meet them for whatever, and then they filmed the meeting getting busted. That's not really the point. How can they legally air that? Surely these guys aren't giving consent. There was a teacher, a rabbi, a doctor, etc... Why would they allow themselves to be outed as a pederast on national television? Or, is there some loophole that allows Dateline to use the footage whether these guys approve or not?

On the Today show preview, Katie Couric was defending these pedophiles, weeping in sympathy for them, but no concern had she for the kids they would abuse.

Don & Mike (radio show) were talking about this last week. While I haven't seen it - they said one thing that amazed them was that one of the guys gets busted...goes home...they set him up again the next day at a McDonalds...and he shows up again. That's the definition of sickness.

Maybe it's like on cops where the criminals aren't protected but other people have their faces blotted out. I guess it's because the video is evidence and therefore public?

Here's the thing, and bear in mind I'm talking out of my a** here. I could see that if the police conducted the investigation, but to my knowledge, Dateline acted alone. I also don't think the pervs they caught were arrested. Legally, if you get arrested you become "newsworthy," so details of what you've done, evidence, etc. can be used be the media as it is released by law enforcement. If the media, sans police, reports that you've committed a crime, even with proof, I don't know the legal ramifications. Hence my post.

You don't have an expectation of privacy when commiting a crime or intending to commit a crime. Nor were they on their own private property, so they have expectation of privacy for that reason either.

You seem more concerned with hiding the identity of scumbags than protecting children against scumbags. Priority check requested.

When have I expressed concern for the well-being of these creeps? I haven't. I'm asking a question about a legal principle, one that could apply in a situation where the "exposed" party isn't a creep.

Example:

If I, you,or anyone go to a girl's place, hook up, she films it with a hidden camera, and releases it on a porn, were we without expectation of privacy just because we were at her place?
