Donations

I know that there are several posts on donations already, but I think I'm asking a different question and don't want to hijack one of those.
The question is:
Is donating money here going to actually accomplish anything?

The context is:
Isn't FEMA going to provide everything that donations to the Red Cross will. I honestly don't know the answer. What "extra" is the relief efforts getting that they wouldn't have gotten anyway? Is it a speed factor or something like that. I really don't know.
