I play drums and I think most drum solos are pretty lame. Drum breaks are cool though because they are in the context of the song. Anything from Tool, Rush, Hendrix drummer was real good, Dave Weckl(insanely good jazz guy), Tony Williams and Buddy Rich are couple more kick ass jazz guys. All these players play technical parts within the framework of the song which is pretty impressive.

47 minute drum solo. It would have been longer, but those guys hate drum solos...

Listen to any Victor Wooten Bass solo and you will change your mind(about bass solos anyway). He has his own albums and he's also part of "Bela Fleck and the Flecktones"...

This is clearly the right answer. Watch the version on this DVD, ideally while not sober but it is the best regardless of your state of mind.

The drum solo during Achilles:Agony and Exstacy in 8 parts by ManOWar is pretty tight.

No love for Keith Moon? The Who had several song with good drum solos- "Won't Get Fooled Again" leaps instantly to mind.

Todd Rundgren's Utopia, The RA album has a song called "Singring and the Glass Guitar" where John "Willie" Wilcox does a fun Drum Solo.

The solo itself on the album/CD is really probably only OK ( I am sure I have seen better drum solos at some of the Jazz shows I had been at) but it is interesting because it is intertwined with this silly story they are trying to tell with the song. It was also mixed pretty well which shouldn't be any surprise since it was produced by Todd.

Where it was really cool was in the live concert. They had this crazy water fountain setup all around him that was kind of like a mini Bellagio fountain sort of thing that was all synced to the drum solo. Probably had to be there to really appreciate it but it was cool at the time. The drum solo was also WAY longer during the concert.
