Default Is 300bb good enough for 1/2 stud hi?

Should I wait until I have 400BB?

Depends on your ability. If you're winning with any consistency at .50/1, you'll be fine at 1/2 with 200BB. If you get knocked down to 100BB, go back to .50/1 and work your way back up. But with 200BB, just find good 1/2 tables and you can make a killing.
The 300BB rule of thumb is based on the assumption of a pretty "regular" variance and a win-rate of 1BB/100 hands over the long run. Most decent players win a bit more than 1BB/100 at .50/1 and 1/2 7 stud hi, so 300BB isn't necessary.

Clearly, you are not playing for a living, so I can't see the risk-of-ruin factor being all that significant. I mean, if you dust off your $600 or whatever, how hard is it going to be to come up with another $50 or $100 to get back in action?
