Default Probability Books?

Can anyone reccomend a good probability book?

Although not a mathematician, I've got a background in math, and am no stranger to combinations, permutations etc. So I'd like something beyond a beginner's text.

Thank you

Hmmm... you can learn some probability in various Statistic books. You can head down to your local college bookstore and check out what they have. If they teach a Probability Theory course then you can also check out what book is required for that.

I learned my basic probability from studying for the first actuary exam. The book that was recommended to me for that was "Probability for Risk Management" by Hassett & Stewart. It covered the basic stuff like Permutations/Combinations, Venn Diagrams, and Bayes. It also had stuff on Discrete and Continuous Distributions and dealt with Multivariable distributions too all the way up to Markov Chains. I think this book was easy reading and took an intuitive approach to explaining stuff. Many of the questions asked in this section of the forum can be solved with permutations and combinations though.

Feller is a classic for probability only (not statistics), though perhaps somewhat terse for a non-math major. His second volume contains even more advanced material. DeGroot is excellent and clearly written for both probability and statistics. It does not include nearly as much advanced probability material as Feller, but its statistics material is quite extensive.

degroot and schervish (blue book) is good for undergrad level prob/stats. for grad level statistical inference by casella/berger is more theoretical.
