Rickey Henderson.

[/ QUOTE ]

I love when I get to share my fav baseball story...

Henderson is playing on the Mets with John Olerud, and asks him why he wears a batting helmet to play in the field...John tells him about the brain surgery he had in college or something like that. Henderson says..., "there was guy I played with in Seattle who did the same thing." Olerud says, "yeah, that was me...we were teammates in Toronto too."

I may have messed up the teams in the re-telling of the story, but the nuts of the story is classic.

[/ QUOTE ]

Never happened ... its an urban legend.

[/ QUOTE ]

It was the quote of the week in SI... i think that lends it some credence

[/ QUOTE ]

If the search function worked for this site ... This story has been debunked with links many times over. It was not the quote of the week in SI, it was "quoted" in a story about Ricky Henderson. I believe this story ran in early 1994. Anyhow, the same story explained the quote was commonly reported as fact, but that it was actually one of a number of legends that has grown due to the fact anyone who knows Henderson, knows this is something he COULD say.

The story also goes on to point out other Henderson "quotes," both real and imagined. Again, the point of the story was that the guy has been around baseball so long and that he has developed his own legends.

The only sport that matters is baseball. The biggest horse's asses in the history of the sport have been: Ty Cobb, Rogers Hornsby, Pete Rose and Tommy Lasorda.

You forgot Joe Morgan (as an announcer).

I heard a radio interview with the son of Ty Cobb a long time ago. He insists his father was a great dad and family man. Considering how many celebrity children are happy to disown their parents, I thought this was very intriguing and makes me question the legends surrounding Cobb.

Who are the atheletes who you hate the most? All time periods are allowed.

Just a few that come to my mind right now.
Daniel Alfredson
Zdeno Chara

[/ QUOTE ]

Gee, a Leaf fan, perhaps? I always find it amazing how *much* you guys hate Alfredsson. The boos that rain down on him whenever he touches the puck are quite comical. You'd think that you'd hate someone like Marian Hossa (for taking out Berard's eye), or Havlat (for being really dirty), or McGrattan (for kicking Domi's a$$) a lot more than Alfredsson...but so be it. Who am I to question the wisdom of "Leaf Nation"?

Darcy Tucker and Wade Belak both crack my list of hated athletes. Tie Domi used to be on there, but he kind of grew on me, despite being a Leaf.

Others on my (hockey-heavy) list:

Albert Belle
Terrell Owens
Sammy Sosa
Manny Ramirez
Rafael Palmeiro
Vince Carter
Allen Iverson
Kobe Bryant
Darcy Tucker
Wade Belak
Shane Corson
Todd Bertuzzi
Jaromir Jagr
Pavel Bure
Ulf Samuelsson
Radek Bonk
Patrick Lalime

...and he's not an athlete, but other people have named coaches, so:

Pat Quinn

A big reason Leaf fans hate Alfredsson is that he mocked Mats Sundin, when he was suspended for throwing a stick in to the crowd (an accident).

Whatever your feelings about the Leafs, Sundin is pure class, and making fun of a Leaf captain is heresy.

Besides ... "I guarantee we will win the Stanley Cup" ?

He had a really bad few months last season.
