I am thinking of playing in this with a couple of buddies. Anyone know what the expected turnout is for the main event?

I was just asking a pro what they thought.

First of all this is the first year that tournament will have competition. on top of that it'll be local competition.

The Gold Strike is doing the WPO solo this year. The Grand is having a WSOP circuit event.

Which tournament are you planning on playing? The 10k buy in? I THINK last year there were about 300 people playing. in the 500 NL HE tourney there were 1200 people.

I hope that helps.

We were thinking of playing in the $10k main event, and if we got knocked out, we heard there was significant action in $20k deep PLO games with 10/25 blinds.

Of course, this is just rumor. I didn't know about the WSOP circuit event - I'll prolly play in whichever has the fewer participants so I can increase my chances of getting a bracelet

I was there last year and there was a ton of pot limit omaha at the goldstrike and a lot of limit omaha/8 at the horseshoe which is right next door to the goldstrike. I happened to be in Memphis for Thanksgiving, so I stopped down to tunica on saturday night and talked to people in both the goldstrike and horseshoe about what the cash games would be like this year, since the tourney moved to the grand. The poker room manager in the horseshoe said they were adding 17 extra poker tables to the pit outside of the poker room, but the goldstrike wasn't clear on what was going on as far as cash games. The goldstrike tourney has only holdem tournaments, so I don't know if they will have the same pot limit omaha action they had last year. I'm guessing there is a chance that the big cash games will move to the grand, because that is where last years tournament is being held this year. If anyone has any information on where they believe all of the limit omaha/8 and pot limit omaha games will be going on at I'd be very appreciative as I will be going down for a couple weeks to play in cash games.

FWIW...I was in Tunica during the last circuit event, and there was a 150/300 mixed game being played at the Horseshoe. They were also spreading up to 40/80 LHE at the Grand. I believe typically 20/40 is the highest stakes you'll find around Tunica until one of the big events come to town.

That's January 2005 and WPT is in Season 4 now. I don't remember seeing a Gold Strike show though. Are the dates and season just off on the site?

Yeah, I know that info was from this past January 2005 and Season 3. Just trying to give an idea of what to expect as far as participants this January for the Season 4 event.

I was there...about 500 people in the main event. Competition might lessen that this year. Huge lines and caps on entries for some of the earlier, lower buy-in tourneys. Lots of side tournies and side games at 10/20-40/80 holdem. Big lines for 10/20 and 20/40.
Huge pot limit omaha8 games. Yes, 10-25 blinds often with a Mississippi straddle. Most everyone had at least 5k in front of them
