Sticking up for the dealer. Was I out of line?

I was playing 4-8 at The Horseshoe Casino Tunica last weekend. I was getting pounded but kept my composure. This older guy (who was a regular) sat down. He played more than the average amount of hands. He'd raise then fold on the flop or turn. A fella was calling his raises with stuff like Q-4 and catching cards and spanking the old guy. After like 3 hands the old guy was basically saying it was the dealers fault. She'd look my way and kind of roll her eyes.

He'd make a few more comments and it was really pissing me off.

A few hands later he raises and I call in position with A-J. There was one other caller. The flop came J-x-x. He bet, the other guy called and I raised. They both then called and the board paired. The old guy bet, the other guy called, and I called. A nothing river and I called the old guys bet.

He had me spanked from the beginning with QQ. I was not mad at all. I've been beat many times before and it wasn't like he drew out on me.

But for probably the first time in years I said something to the fella. I asked him if the dealer was still doing a terrible job. He mumbled something. I asked again if she was still that bad. He then said she was still doing bad because "of a scary board like that". I told him he had 2 guys calling his bets all the way to the river. I told him I didn't know what else he could have asked for. We jabbed a little back and forth. Then he started whispering to the guy next to him that I was just mad because I lost the hand.

I decided to drop it even though I wasn't mad about losing. Heck, I'd lost many many hands during the course of that day and didn't complain about it before. I just don't understand how people can think it's the dealers fault for them not catching cards.

Should I have just shut up and let the guy keep moaning?

that sounds like a very low key confrontation.
leave it at that and play your game. don't worry about getting into his head because it could distract you from playing correctly.

Fold preflop. But in general, I just let this stuff go...don't want to tighten up the table by making everyone uncomfortable. Let him whine if he wants, as long as he's not truly abusing the dealer, I'm not getting involved. I hear people piss and moan at the dealer all the time when they lose...comes with the territory.

Sticking up for the dealer would have involved saying something when he berated her.

What you did was to throw an earlier comment back into someone's face after they put a beat on you.

Not a 3-bet, if this guy is playing a bit loose? Although I guess OP didn't really say anything about his raising standards...

Thanks for the replys. I guess I should have said something at a different time. Where it wouldn't look like I was steaming about losing a hand.

For the person that asked : Everytime he entered a pot he raised. So there was a very wide range of hands he could have when he raised.

Also the 4-8 game at the Shoe is crazy. Calling a 3 bet with top pair and an overkicker is an easy one. if you havn't been around there to see it you should come by if it's at all in your area. 4-way capped bets (24 dollars)starting with a live straddle with 8-3. The guy with the 8-3 wasn't the one who straddled it either. Not that it should make a difference.

Screw the old bastard. I would have kept goading his sorry ass till he went on tilt so bad his old crone of a wife at home watching oprah would have been pissed off too. I would tighten up A LOT, so as to be in few pots, and lose even fewer, and every time he lost, prod and goad a little more, then every time he won, say something like "scary board, eh gramps?"

Your dealer would probably rather hear the old guy bitch and complain that he never gives him any cards then have to deal with an argument at the table between you two.

I guess my only thought here is was the old guy really berating the dealer at all.

He's a regular, maybe he knows the all the dealers and 'blaming' them when he doesn't get cards is part of his banter is to talk this way.
