Default rakeback vs bonus?

I kno absolute you keep your rakeback as well as bonus but for a lower limt player playing 1/2 is it better to just chase the bonus's out there instead of getting a rakeback deal and losing some of the bonus's? I kno BW offers a monthly reloads through hollywood but there is also rake back, would it prob be better to play wit the bonus?
I know rakeback is free money but at what levels do you think this is essential, since your in it more for a profit then clearing bonus's. Right now all i do is clear bonus's.

Default Re: rakeback vs bonus?

When you sign up with a new site, you have 3 options:

1) Sign up directly through the site and get a signup bonus. Site gets all of your generated rake.
2) Sign up through a site affiliate who usually gives you a better signup bonus. Affiliate gets a percentage of your rake for bringing in new customers.
3) Sign up through a site affiliate who usually gives you a better signup bonus AND gives you a rakeback deal where you get a percentage of your monthly gross revenue (MGR) back.

If you use option 1 or 2, most sites do NOT allow you to transfer your account to an affiliate to get rakeback later on when you say "hey, rakeback might be worth something to me here".

Now how do bonuses impact MGR? Most sites subtract an awarded bonus from your MGR. Some sites subtract a percentage of the bonus from your MGR. Some sites do not subtract the bonus from your MGR at all.

In the examples below, we'll assume you have a 25% rakeback deal. Lets look at what happens with and without rakeback and with and without a $100 bonus when you generate $50, $100 or $150 in MGR. And we'll assume the site subtracts the complete bonus from your MGR.

The key note here is that as a player, even if you clear more in bonuses from a site than your MGR amount for the month, so MGR-bonus is a negative number, you do not "owe" anything here. Some sites/affiliates zero out the negative number and you start at 0 again the next month. Other sites/affiliates keep the negative number on the books as a carryover to the following month. You can keep earning bonuses, but until you get to a point where your MGR is greater than the cleared bonus amount, you wont get any rakeback. You still get the bonus though.

Money = Bonus + (MGR - Bonus) * Rakeback Percentage

Example 1: $50 MGR

RB Only: $0 + ($50 - $0) * 0.25 = $12.50
Bonus Only: $100
RB + Bonus: $100 + ($50 - $100) * 0.25 = $100 (-50 MGR counts as 0)

Example 2: $100 MGR

RB Only: $0 + ($100 - $0) * 0.25 = $25.00
Bonus Only: $100
RB + Bonus: $100 + ($100 - $100) * 0.25 = $100

Example 3: $150 MGR

RB Only: $0 + ($150 - $0) * 0.25 = $37.50
Bonus Only: $100
RB + Bonus: $100 + ($150 - $100) * 0.25 = $112.50

So Rakeback < Bonus <= Rakeback + Bonus

While you are playing lower limits, you may not see much benefit from rakeback. However, a little extra cash is better than none, right? And if you don't get setup for rakeback at the beginning, you'll be locked out later own down the road.

Sure there are usually other skins on the same poker room network that you can signup at to get rakeback, but down the road as you move up, if you are clearing a bonus on a site at $2/$4, $3/6, you could be benefiting more with rakeback than without.
