Default New stud player seeks advice

I am a new poker player. I have read several books on poker. Theory of Poker, Sklansky's 7 card stud, poker for dummies, and a couple others. I have played only in $1-5
7-card stud in Tunica. The games seem to be much tighter and different from what the books have said. Is this just an anomoly? I have only played there 4 times. Also I play on some of the sites on the web with play money. Is this a good idea to improve my skills? These people seem to play crazy since it's play money. Any other tips to help a new player to become better would be appreciated.
Thx
Vic

I play a lot of play money poker on line, because my wife won't let me have the credit cards. Just as well. I've also played tons of live action poker, and there really is very little resemblence between the two. Play money poker is not good preparation for real money poker. The one exception I can think of is that heads-up play money hold'em games on Paradise sometimes bear some resemblence to heads-up hold'em games played in a casino. If you want to sharpen your skills playing on-line, it's probably worthwhile to send a small amount of money to a site and play micro-limit.

Those books are good, but you should probably read Roy West's "7 Card Stud." Read it and commit it to memory -- with the knowledge in that book you will regularly win at $1-$5 7 Card stud and feel confident that you are, at any given time, the best (or one of the best) players at the table. It will help teach you the lesson of discipline, which is probably most important.

Second, try to play the .50/1.00 7 card stud game on Paradise. This is a pretty close simulation to the kinds of plays you should be making at $1-$5. That is, you should exhibit the same kind of discipline on 3rd street in that game, since there is no ante to steal.

Good luck!

Doc.

Default Hello,vprice! I agree with Dock...Study Roy West for....low

and low medium limit stud. Tape record the chapters and review from time to time.
Most of the players at Tunica are probably retirees who are "regulars". The games will usually be very tight.
"Tunica" is not a tourist's attraction like Harrahs in New Orleans , Vegas,or Atlantic City. In these places,U will find more loose, juicy games.
The 1/5 games that are tight are difficult to beat--no ante, nothing to struggle for, rake, toke, jackpot rake.
If these 1/5 games are always tight, start playing online.
U probably went to Tunica during the week. If so,try to go on Fri nights,Sat's and Sun's.
Perhaps U will find looser games over there.
Playing for play money WILL improve your game. U will find some players with plenty of play money who are decent real money players.
If U are able to build your play-money bankroll sufficiently to play in a 100-200 play money game,U will find that U will be playing against some good real money 1/5 players.
I started playing with 1000 play money online about a year ago .
I'm talking about Hold'em.
In order to play in the play-money 100-200 game, one needed 5K.
This amount provided an incentive for players to play a better game--not to play with random cards.
After increasing my play money game to 200K,I started to play 1/2 real money hold'em.
So far,I'm happy to report that I'm doing quite well.
The play money drills did indeed help me .

Thanks for the advice. I have ordered the Roy West book. What are some good online poker rooms to play in?
