Default Wireless Internet

Hello,
I just bought a new laptop because of dell's $750 off deal and I was wondering if there is any way I could get some type of internet service where I could get on the internet wherever I wanted to...like Canada, Hawaii, or the middle of the ocean. Also, if this is not possible, how do you people get online at hotels or colleges, as I see people walking around on the internet, not connected to the phone lines. Is this just some kind of wifi? LMK please. I appreciate it.

There are hotspots all over the place, I have a T-Mobile acct, so I can play at just about any Starbucks.

Pretty much every cellular phone provider now has an option to buy a PCMCIA card that will get you on their network (for a monthly fee, natch). It's up to you to make sure that their service works where you want it.

Failing that, yeah, just go hit a Starbucks.

I travel frequently and rarely stay in a hotel that doesn't offer wireless in the room, bar, restuarant, etc for a fairly standard charge of $10/day. Not a great deal, but worth it if you travel a lot.

Starbucks is a biggy. And McDonald's is test marketing and will likely roll out wifi in the very near future. I've checked around my area a couple times here and they don't seem to be participating yet.

There is a cheap device you can get at Radio Shack that will detect hotspots. I've found many that let you jump on with no front end at all (as in free access). Other spots have a secure front end so you either cannot access or you pay for it, like at the hotels I mentioned.
I mainly stay in Hyatt, Hilton, Marriot, and it seems they're all wired.

Cell and sat phones are the other option, but my friends claim they are pricey. Yet two or three of them can't live without.

Wireless is great, but remember that you are sharing the connection with anybody that is in range. Make sure you have an excellent firewall.............

Oh, it's sick how many open connections there are out there. Krystal restaurants has them. I like this link , too. It shows free hotspots.

Also, you can download wifi sniffers that show you if the connection is WEP enabled (open or closed). I use WiFiFofum on my PDA.
