Table stakes are part of the rules, which need to be enforced.

[/ QUOTE ]

You misunderstood.

Clearly the casino needs to enforce the rules.

Clearly the players desire a chance to win the money back.

Clearly the casino defines the rules.

Why does the casino feel the need to make a rule about taking money off the table?

One possible reason has to do with chip counterfeiting. I was playing with a $100 chip once in a $4/$8 game in Oklahoma (won it from blackjack) and the floor had a very stern talk to me about making sure I kept it on the table and not in my pocket. (There's no way I would have pocketed it but apparently they had to tell me that before they let me sit down at hte game.) I got the distinct impression with large chips they kept track of them via cameras or something so that somebody didn't walk in with a caseful of $100 countefeits and cash them out. Is this a worry anywhere else, or is the Cherokee just super paranoid?

I never gave this a thought until I read this post. I have used my chips in play to tip, buy food, pay for tournaments, you name it. I have seen many others do this to and never cared. I have never put chips in my pocket but I put cash under my chips and then took it back as my chip stack improved. It might not matter at my local casino but when I travel it will be something to think about. Great post and discussion.

If it is, that seems like a pretty crappy reason. I mean, you're going to have to remove the chips to cash out, right? And you could always slip them in your pocket then.

All of the replies to date have good information, but I think they missed something...

Rules vary from room to room.

[/ QUOTE ]

I happen to have played in a room, Star City Casino in Sydney, where taking chips of the table was both allowed and occurred on a regular basis. It pissed me off but there was nothing I could do about it.

Following is an extract from their Poker Homepage.

Hiding or removing chips from the table
Provided you have the minimum buy-in on the table, you are permitted to remove any excess chips in between a round of play. However, Poker players consider the removal of chips bad etiquette as is deliberately hiding chips on the table from other player's view.

I imagine it's even stricter at NL if anything can be stricter than not allowed.

This reminds me of a 10/20 game i was playing in back in the day in tunica. I had made several big pots, went on a nice rush, and easily had like 2500 on the table. It was apparent that the table was about to break, and i was just piddling around to see if i could get a piece of the one bad player sitting at the table. I then took a few bills off the table, and one guy who was tilting a bit started bitching about rat holing. The dealer then looks at me, looks at him, and says "this guy is gonna get up long before he gives that money back to you, dont worry about it." I just smiled and went to dinner.

peace

I've never seen a room that allows you to take money off the table, whether in the form of chips or cash if you put cash under your chips or sell chips. Either way, you can't remove money from the table. I always play limit. I imagine it's even stricter at NL if anything can be stricter than not allowed.

Call him out on it any player who does this is the player you want to have chips as he has no game....

One poker room here in Vegas actually has a mandatory ratholing rule (I have argued with every floorman about this rule-- they all agree it is a bad rule but the manager will not change it) In their $200 max buy-in NL game they have a rule that if you voluntarily change tables to another table of the same game you may not bring more than the $200 max buy-in.

So if they have two $200 max games going and you double up and then decide to change tables you must remove $200 from play.

There are several reasons.

1) To keep the game going. Players don't want to play in game where they can't win anything. If players keep removing chips from play -- players will walk.

2) Because part of the Tbale stakes rule is the all-in rule. Being All-in is a great advantage to a player on a draw who gets to draw without having to call additional bets (this is why a frequent problem in on-line poker has been abuse of the all-in disconnect protection many sites use), therefore removing chips allows these players to get to use the benefit of the table stakes rule (all-in protection).
