Good dealers in the right location can make a very nice living. Not "get rich", but a nice living anyways. It's highly dependent on your own skills, and most of all, location, location, location.

Unfortunately for 95% of the new dealers out there, they are not taught the most important aspects of dealing. Hell most floor people dont even know the #1 job of a dealer. It isnt to pitch cards, Games were self dealt by the players 30 yrs ago in California card rooms. It isnt to collect the rake, they had "time collectors" back then that came by every 1/2 hr.

Whats the NUMBER ONE job of a dealer? Anyone?

I can't believe how many replies there are to this post, and only one of them gives a figure (95k), which is wrong. how much you make as a dealer depends a lot on where you work. in california, most of them make around 200-250 a day. in vegas, they make less than that. in certain smaller casinos, like colorado or palm springs, they might make as much as 400 a day working the best shifts.

so dealers in california make around 40-60k a year, vegas, 30-40k a year, and in the best jobs, they make upwards of 60k a year.

anyone think this is absolutely ludicrous pay for a job which requires very little training/no outside talent?

damn, look at this:

http://www.losangelesalmanac.com/top...yment/em12.htm

an LA fricking poker dealer makes twice to three times the median LA income? you've got to be joking me. many/most of these people don't even do their job well.

we need to give members of the LAUSD tip boxes.

No. Having to deal with other people sucks. People are jerks.

Dealers, waiters and other service industry people deserve every dime they get.

Edited to remove a rather negative tone.

If this were the case there would be more poker dealers than there are openings for poker dealers.

Sit in a dealer box for 5 minutes then come back here and let us know how you did.

come on guys, you can sit there and make dealing cards sound hard, which i'm sure it is at times, but you can't possibly compare that with a job like an EMT, ER nurse or high school teacher, all of whom work more hours for less pay.

I know dealers are near and dear to poker players, but after having read this thread, any comments on poor tippers that i hear will be ignored. first and second year medical residents make less, both yearly and hourly. that's sick.

as for those using the market argument:

1. the job suffers from social stigma
2. the job offers little upward mobility except in the gambling industry, which again, #1
3. the job is not well advertised; i'd be willing to bet even money that i could find 10 bouncers/telemarketers/fast-food clerks who have no idea about such an opportunity and would gladly take such a job if the did.

obviously the above contribute heavily to the high salary; what also contributes is the fact that the actual product, variance, which casinos sell is dirt cheap. all the money is in the packaging which makes for high salaries for those willing to spend their time creating and distributing randomness.
