WPT -vs- WSOP

WSOP just announced there circuit schedule for next year and they upped the amount to 12 this time. The big thing I noticed is that some of them are held during the same time as some WPT events. Since alot of pros have started following the big buyin (TV) events around, which one will they choose. I could see this becoming a HUGE war between the two groups as to who can attract the most entrys and names. Look at these schedules and compare.

I suppose that pros that want to play in both of them will buy in to the tourney schelduled first and if they bust they will by into the other one.

If this is true then the WSOP has a slight advantage.

The WSOP events seem like they are only going to be held at Harrah's properties.

It's interesting that Harrah's, Paris/Bally's, Caersars Palace, and the Rio in Las Vegas all have big poker tournaments yet Wynn isn't on either WSOP or WPT tour. Paris and Caesars Palace don't even have poker rooms.

Still going to be a final table which is televised on TV. Shouldn't make much of a difference, maybe just a bit smaller of fields.

With any luck, the competition will be good for players with WPT and WSOP reducing the juice and improving the tourney structures to attract more players. One can dream anyway.

Is the juice (10k + ?) reduced substatially for these tourny's compared to other 10K's.

Also, are there still some(many?) 10k's that aren't televised anymore? (just curious about that)

I don't know if the Grand has published their schedule yet for their January WSOP-circuit tourneys....but I'm almost positive that the WPO at the Grand main-event will take place Jan 22-26.

Thus, it might make sense that the Grand could do their main-event the week BEFORE (Jan 16-20 perhaps).

Then while the Gold Strike is running their big event the Grand would be running a series of smaller events ($1k buy-in type stuff) partly geared towards those who got knocked out of the Gold Strike main-event.


This is a LONG way of saying that it would just strike me as pretty damn bizarre if they both ran $10k main-events at the same time.

Last year during the WPO at the Gold Strike there were a bunch of smaller tourneys at the Grand that were pretty popular.


I'm probably swinging down to the Grand for a prelim event during WSOP-circuit tourneys they are holding next month....so if I hear anything about whether they really DO want to hold their january main-event at the SAME TIME as the WPO main-event then I'll report back here.


Even though the WPO has more tradition (8 yrs I believe) and is considered a pretty major event (for 3 weeks worth of tourneys) I would have to think that the WSOP-circuit tourneys are now carrying slightly more weight with the big-name pros just because of the name as well as the points you get for the tournament of champions, etc (not sure how all that works).


A not-very-good example happened last March when the WPT had their PPM IV cruise at the same time as the WSOP-circuit at the Rio (that just aired on ESPN I believe).
Most of the 'big' names stayed in Vegas to play that one.

But part of that could have been due to the cruise being a limit tourney (not as appealing as no-limit for many players) as well as it being just more convenient to stay in Vegas instead of being 'stuck' on a cruise just to play a tourney (if 'cruising' isn't your thing).

But Negreneau was runner-up on the cruise the year before (for example) and didn't even bother with it this year.


Anyway - I kind of think the WSOP-circuit tourneys are going to be holding a bit more clout than the WPT for some of the bigger name pros.

Then again, the WPT is still at major rooms like the Commerce, Foxwoods and the Bellagio....
whereas the WSOP-circuit is in Louisville, (Caesar's Indiana), Biloxi and freaking Paris/Bally's.

So who can tell?

I think the WSOP circuits carry more clout because you have a chance to be on ESPN. If I had to choose I would take my chance at ESPN and also the final table is 9 handed instead of WPT's 6 handed.
