Default A turn check

Earlyish on in a $15/$30 session. MP seems quite loose/aggressive. He open raises 2 off the button and I make it 3 bets on the button with . Blinds fold and he calls.

Flop:

He checks, I bet, he says "I'm making a loose call" and does.

Turn:

He checks and I check.

River:

He checks, I bet, he thinks for some time and calls, and my hand is good obviously. Thoughts?

He thought that he would chop the pot.

I like the turn check. You got an extra river bet from him.

He checks, I bet, he says "I'm making a loose call" and does Good thing his loose call didnt include 9 [img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] 10 [img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img]

hi vehn
you missed a bet on the turn. it looks like he has KQs. usually vehn, when a player says he's making a loose call, it's a call with a second best made hand; one that he must call with because he hit his hand, but realizes that hitting his hand isn't what he wanted. belatedly here vehn. yea, say what you will, the opponent probably is thinking it'd been better off to miss his hand completely so he could fold, like when you hit top pair with QJs.

when an opponent says "i'm making a loose call.", he has a made hand, only it's forcing him to call against what he knows is a better hand. believe me vehn, he's not telling you that he's on a draw so please bet the turn too. he is also not telling you a total lie; as you sense there is truth in what he is saying. you know, he's not going to lie in front of everyone and show down the nuts, making himself the main target for the rest of the night. he's telling you that he has to call you down the whole way so if you're not sure that your top pair best kicker is leading, please don't bet into him to get the fold because, he says, "i'm calling you down the whole way." that's what 'i'm making a loose call' means. so bet into him strongly with any winner, and do check all draws because he will let a free one slide off.

The river card makes this play appear to be better than it was, I think. What would have happened if the 2 [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] had come?

Looks like you missed a turn bet.

There are times when I will check the nuts in last position, head up on the turn. this isn't one of them.

Hey Vehn,

Against sufficiently loose opponents in limit hold'em, I rarely trap. I just bet my hand. I think if he called the flop with any reasonable holding (I'll include hands like AJ as reasonable) he'll probably call again on the turn. Hell, if he has 99, he might try a checkraise. I think you probably missed a bet on the turn here.

Or far worse, another spade comes. Then he might end up with no post-flop action at all.

That's fair, but what if his statement of "loose call" is true? What do you put him on? Do you think he calls the turn here?

An excellent point. My intent was to pick the blankest of blanks. You nailed one of the worst cases, I think.

Which begs the question: under what circumstances will you make that play?
