The point is the that the staff is probably crazy and will not react in what you think would be normal in this situation. If it is a nonprofit then the rules change.

Some people here seem to be focused on whether your a douchbag or not, but that's not the point.

The point is you put in 25 hours and deserve the credit. If I were in your position I would explain to the dean or whoever what happened, tell him you made a joking comment in passing to the supervisor and got fired over it. I can't see any reason they would discount the hours, unless you personally pissed off someone in the university administration, and they want you out.
