Rewarding oneself for playing?
I have a problem with putting in the hours playing poker that I should. Often I just sit around doing nothing instead of doing poker. Unfortunately, I am giving up quite a bit of potential cash by not taking advantage of my time. Obviously, I have lost some interest in the game. I thought that a solution to this problem would be to give myself some sort of reward for playing. Has anyone tried this and do you think it will work? What kind of reward should I use?

Beyond your minimum bankroll - use 3 of every 4 dollars earned to continue building your bankroll and 1 of every 4 dollars earned set aside to buy something you've really been wanting.

Take some portion of the earnings (it has to be a significant amount to you; for me this would probably be around $1000) and go blow it on whatever; take it to a casino and have a blast at the craps or roulette table. After 1 or maybe 2 times of doing this, you will think of something that you really would have liked to use that cash for.

Re: Rewarding oneself for playing?
Forget rewards. If winning money isn't reward enough for you, then I don't know what could be. Well, nothing PG-rated, anyway.
If you're stuck in a poker rut, vary the games you're playing. Try some (cheap) NL ring, enter a few SNGs, or give Omaha or Stud a shot. That works for me when I find myself starting to get bored with HE. Multi-tabling also helps. Go read (or re-read) a good poker strategy book. Usually when I do that I'll notice some tactic that I haven't been using, or if it's a new book one that I hadn't thought of, and I can't wait to go try it out. Watch Rounders, or some old WSOP footage. Then again, if you've seriously lost interest in poker, just quit. Maybe you'll feel the urge to throw your chips back on the table in a week or a month, maybe not...whatever; if you have to continuously force yourself to play, you probably shouldn't be playing. |
