Seems like Bart is making an arbitrary distinction between tournament play and cash play...

There are many good cash players who also have weaknesses, for example you can have full ring, short, HU, NL, Limit, etc., specialists who are extremely +EV in the games they play but would get slaughtered in any other game.

To me, poker is about maximizing +EV and if a player realizes he can do that by playing strictly tournaments, he's a great poker player.

A lot of tournaments are based on getting lucky at the right time because of escalating blinds.

Its also a lot easier to bluff your way through a tournament especially if you are up against a lot of tight players. You can do this at a cash game as well, but it usually won't earn you a lot of money you'll just take down a lot of small pots and eventually get trapped.

Being a winning cash game player is all about making good laydowns (at full ring anyway). In tournies, you find yourself in a lot of situations with blinds going up and your stack dwindling. Like you might have Top Pair Top Kicker bet and get raised, know you're probably beat, but have so few chips left you just go ahead with it. In a cash game you can always rebuy so you can fold here more easily.

I guess I'm not expressing it well, but I think decisions are more precise at cash games whereas in tournaments you just have to accept the luck factor is a lot higher and a lot of decisions are automatic.
