Default Just won the PP late night 100 NL

500 entrants $12,240 in the bank...man I'm pumped. This win comes on the end of an unreal cold streak. Poodle Kong is my screen name. Don't ask... Heads up I was down 3 to 1 in chips.. man this feels good...

played patient, aggressive poker and caught a few breaks. Funny thing is I didn't really want to play in the tourney. In fact, I tried unsuccessfully to unregister. Early I played tight and never put many chips in harms way. I was fortunate enough to have one of the larger stacks with about 30 to go, so I was able to steal quite a bit and take advantage of position. With about 70 left I caught KK down and doubled the blinds from mp. I had about 8K and the table lead had 12K or so. He called on the big blind and the flop came J K J. He checked. I checked. the turn brings a thrid spade. He bet out the minimum and I raised it 3 times his bet. He thought a minute and pushed. river was a blank. he turned up A J.

The heads up game lasted about 30 minutes. I went into it a 3 to 1 dog to a loose passive player that had caught some amazing cards to get to where he was. (one of the weakest at the final table) I evened it up at about 250K with blinds at 8K/16K. Then I made a bad read and bluffed off about 100K in chips. stold the blinds and got up to about 180K. Then I fell back down to around 100K. This is where he messed up....he almost froze up. applied no pressure and let me back in . The deciding hand is as follows. I've got about 175K to his 325K. blinds at 10K/20K. I get A2s on the button and he makes it 40K to go. I call and the flop comes 9 3 5 rainbow. He bets 20K(i had a good read at this point) and I called. The turn comes 4. he bets out 50K or so and I reraise 100K+ all in. he calls and pays off with 9 Q. Shortly after he went on tilt and I trapped him two or three hands later with top two. First multi win.

Congrats....reading your email gets me psyched to play.....Seems to me as long as you play solid poker, and minimize mistakes while takeing full advatage of opportunities, you give yourself a "chance".....however, not having ever flat out won a tourny, it would seem that an important element that separates 1st place from the rest is a good dose of good old fashion luck....getting the right cards, in the right position, with favorable flops that induce action. I know that there are many debates about the varying degrees that both luck and skill play in poker. My opinion is that playing solid poker and being able to adjust to the different stages of a tournament gives you the best chance to be successful, both in that tourny and in the long run. However, i summize that anyone that has won a tournament, and tries to say it was all skill is not being truthful. Note: I am not in any way suggesting that you are claiming that, in fact you noted in your tourny recap that the cards bounced your way a few times. It just had me thinking about this debate and I'm interested in your assessment, having just won. For instance, how many times in the tourny did you find yourself all in preflop with hands like AK, KK, QQ, even AA? Having won the tourny, you were obviously batting 1000 in that department. Thanks and congrats.....

reddred, it's was an odd tourney in that until the final table I never really put my chips in harms way. I caught KK all night. There was a run with 20 or so left in which I took out 3 in less than two orbits. AQs, JJ, and a pair of 10's (may have been 9s) held. I had a high batting average at this point, but I was in position and had a large roll to play these aggressive. One thing that kept coming to mind was "Man, these people keep playing marginal hands and forcing things"...amazing what people do in a pinch. No doubt you have to catch more than a few breaks coming in. My tournament record this year is outstanding and I credit a combination of a lot of things with luck being a big factor. I placed 5th in the 200 hold em friday event a couple months back, and have made two other final tables and a hand full of cashes in approx. 20-25 entries. I usually stick to 10/20 short games. I've been on the bad side of coin flips with 20 to go before, so this is really sweet.

I did catch one bad beat with 3 remaining, which at the time stung like hell. chip lead had 275K on the big blind. I was in small blind with 150K and the button had 80K or so. blinds at 5/10K . He made it 20K to go. I had Ac Jc and made it 40K to go. bb folds and small stack calls. flop comes Jh 8d 9c. I push and he calls. he turns up Ad Jd......you guessed it... running diamonds flip flopped our position. I was down as low as 40K or so before I doubled through with a low pocket pair.

The heads up match was some of my best poker to date heads up imo. and I was surprisingly level headed. Heads up requires more skill. Kinda rambled...don't know if i answered or not.

Clearly coincidental, but I have had similar experiences with tournaments that I try to get out of at the last minute - end up making the final table.
