You can do it from time to time, but there are a few things that I look for first:

- The player auto bets when checked to on the flop. This should also be the type of player who will not always bet again if called.

- You sometimes make this play with stronger hands. If you only do it with weak hands/nothing, even the dumbest of players will begin to catch on if you are showing down the worst hand everytime.

Is there something i'm misunderstanding in raising an LP's bet and folding to an early bet?

I thought the whole reason to check like this was to see where the field is at and act accordingly. EP bettors probably aren't bluffing and LP ones probably are with a flop like that

I do this some times too. Assuming you have a good TA table image, use it on occasion. Don't do it all the time of course, but it works enough to do occasionally to be +EV imho.
