Are softcore porn stars really having sex?

Like Playboy TV-esque porn, the ones where penetration is not explicitly shown. I think probably, because it seems like it would be easier to film regular sex in a way that obscures penetration than elaborately fake two naked grunting bodies only inches away from each other. As long as they're in the porn industry anyway, it seems odd they would stop short of actual sex. But maybe I'm mistaken.

I'm sure Dom will jump in w/ the facts here, but my understanding was that many of those movies are just regular pornos shot/edited to not show penetration. (ie: there's the porno version of the movie and the Showtime version) holla!
