Well, I figured that the choice I needed to make was to see a showdown or fold now. I decided that the opponent could have a hand like TT or even sometimes a [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] draw as often as AK, so I had to try to show the hand down...

Preflop: Hero is UTG+1 with A Q. SB posts a blind of $0.50. BB Posts a blind of $1.00. 1 fold, Hero raises to $3.50, 2 folds, MP calls $3.50, LP calls $3.50, 3 folds.

Flop (3 players, $12.00): 2[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] A[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] 3[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img]
Hero bets $9, 1 fold, LP raises to $20, Hero calls $11.

Turn (2 players, $52): [2[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] A[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] 3[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img]] T[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img]
Hero bet $35, LP calls $35.

River (2 players, $122): [2[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] A[img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] 3[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] T[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img]] Q[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img]

I have $40 left. I wanted to get them all in the middle, and I felt the best way was to induce. At this point I'm convinced he has AK, and he won't let the river go by un-bet. So, I checked.

Hero checks, LP bets $40, Hero calls all-in.

Just push the river, if he has anything he will call, and he checks behind with AJ, A2, A3

Check river is best against missed draws, but you lose value from ax[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img]

Unfortunately, the opponent showed me a set of duces, and MHING.

I misplayed this hand. What was my error?

There is a variation of this concept.. it goes "and if he has nothing, he will fold."

I like a check-call in this spot. AKo might check behind and we can get diamonds to bluff.

Before I read the outcome, my impression was that Villian showed no fear of the Ace that flopped, indicating that Villian either had an Ace, or called the PF bet with a pair and flopped the set.

Of course, Villian could be bluffing the flop under the assumption that hero didn't have ace. Not knowing Villian, I would discount this possibility.

I agree w/ the following post. You hate to play hands that, even if you hit the flop, get you in trouble.

Let's say Villian didn't flop the set. He probably would've folded to your flop bet. So your upside is that you win a small pot; downside, you lose your stack. Not my kind of deal.

For this very reason, I fold all no pair hands other than AK UTG and UTG+1 when I have just sat at a full table. Once in this situation without reads I fold though. He wants to play a big pot, you don't and you're in no spot to control the pot size. Hope 100nl is treating you well

i think you played it fine. folding the flop is the safest play, but not the most profitable. the line you took is riskier and you will lose sometimes, but you'll win more money when you win.
