Varkoni isn't given the same attention because you can't figure out how to spell his name. No one can. Moneymaker on the other hand is very easy to spell and is just too great of a pun for the newspapers and other media outlets to let slip by.
I bet the online satelite part of it played a role too. I think poker would have gotten as big as it is now, but it may have taken an extra year if not for Moneymaker's win. - Jason |

I consider myself a SportsCenter junkie, and I don't remember watching any coverage with Varkoyni.
It's Moneymaker's victory for the obvious reasons: 1) He's an American named Moneymaker 2) The hole card cams introduced on ESPN. They give the added feeling of "armchair quarterback" to the viewer. 3) That huge bluff he pulled on Farha. |
