KK vs ugly flop - any way to minimize the damage?
Villain is LAG pre-flop, and a calling station post flop - 65/13/0.5 WSD-40%. He will, however, take a shot at the pot if checked to.
I have been running cold for quite a while. As a result the few decent hands I've gotten have been given a lot of respect - everyone either folds PF or folds to my continuation bet. This is the first hand at this table that's been the exception - probably because I was on a mini-streak and this hand was the third in the last 5 I'd raised PF with. Stacks: Hero - 146 MP - 122 Hero has K [img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img],K [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] in the SB Preflop (6 players) : UTG calls, MP calls, CO folds, Button folds, Hero raises to $5.50, BB calls, UTG folds, MP calls. ($17.50) Flop (3 players) : 4 [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img],5 [img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img],8 [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] Hero bets $17, BB folds, MP calls. I do NOT like this flop. Villain could have any piece of it - a flush draw, a straight draw, a made straight, or an 8. I'm guessing he'd raise here w/ a set or better, but I can't be certain. ($51.50) Turn (2 players) 2 [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] Hero bets $50, MP calls. When villain fails to raise on the flop, I put him on a draw or an 8. My original intent was to push the turn if a blank hit....but the 2 was not exactly a blank. ($151.50) River: 5 [img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] Hero sees red (literally and figuratively) and throws $50 worth of chips at CO...who of course calls. The river bet is pretty questionable, I know. At the time I made it (well right after, really) I thought it was absolutely terribe, but after thinking it over I don't think it was quite that bad. It's still wrong, but only somewhat. Villain could easily have played an 8 or a gutshot draw this way, and I was getting 4-1 if he called my last bet, so he only has to play the 8 or gutshot 20% of the time for this bet to be correct. I'm more interested in everyone's thoughts about the flop and river. This hand was dangerous from the start. I didn't like putting so much money into this hand, but playing it hard was the only way I could see to play it. Either that or curl up into a fetal position and fold straight off on the flop. Playing hard seemed the least wrong. Playing it soft would not only give him odds to draw; it would also invite a bluff that might drive me off the winning hand. Thoughts? |
