I take it you have never done an NCAA bracket?

The main reason is because if you know who everyone is picking to win (and get to finals, etc), you can increase your chance of winning the pool by picking someone who is less likely to win in your opinion but not picked at all.

An extreme example: 50 brackets, with 25 picking El Diablo and 25 picking KKF to win.

You think El Diablo, KKF each have a 35% chance to win and durrrr has a 30% chance to win.

You would do best by picking durrrr to win because you would get a major point boost relative to others in the case that he does win because no one else picked him. So now you only have to get very few of your early picks to win the pool.
