The spending can be as high or low as you want with a correspondent tax rate. Regardless, at some point the economic cycle hits a downturn and you need to stimulate. And when the cycle overheats it makes sense to slow it down somewhat.

That being said I agree spending is way too high. But even were it half the level it is now and taxes were half what they are now at some point during the economy will need a boost or brakes.

Well I know a lot of Democrats who are liberal on social issues but tend to be fairly conservative on fiscal matters. Of course you have Republicans like Arnold and Guiliani who are similar. Maybe we should start our own party.
