Default Should we feel compassion for mercenaries killed in war?

I'd say Hell no. If you're willing to fight a war for the private sector, you deserve it.

People who own and operate private mercenary contractors should be jailed or worse.

Why? I guarantee you that mercenaries have committed fewer "warcrimes" per-capita than conscripts. In modern times at least.

What makes these people different from those who were willing to fight a war in the public sector?

The mercenaries can leave any time they want, get many more perks, and make six figures. Just a few differences.

no -

like a poster said "live by the sword, die by the sword" It's not like you're protecting your family/home/country - you're paid to kill, and if someone pays a better person to kill you in return....too goddamn bad.

So we should abandon any compassion for their deaths because they make more money? Talk about heartless...

[/ QUOTE ]No, because profit and fun are their primary motivations for killing- not protecting their country, ensuring freedoms, helping humanity or anything else.

Yeah, nobody ever joined the army for selfish motives. A lot of those kids just want someone to pay for their college education. Some of them just joined for the chance to blow stuff up.

The only thing different about mercenaries in the Iraq theater is that they have particular in-demand skills and experience and are getting the market rate for them.

Obviously, if you're good at your job and make a lot of money at it, you're a worthless human being.
