Default Carling Cup / FA Cup

What are the differences in the participants in the English FA Cup and the Carling Cup?

I am pretty sure that the FA Cup is open to any English club but the Carling Cup is more restricted. But I can't find the answer as to who exactly is in the Carling Cup.

Can any UKers help a Yankee out? Thanks.

Carling Cup is only for the teams in the first 4 levels of English football. That would be the Premiership, Championship and 1st and 2nd Division.

there are 4 fully professional divisions, The Premier Legue, the Football league championship, league 1, and league 2. There are also tiers of football below league 2 that you can get promoted up from. I think in all total, there are 11 divisions of both professional and amateur football. Theoretcially you can climb the ladder all the way up(though I don't know of any team that has done that off hand)

The FA cup is open to any team with membership of the english FA so my local village team that gets 1 man and his dog there usually can enter the preliminary rounds. Round 1 proper comes after I think 6 preliminary rounds so the non league teams then get a shot at the 3rd and 4 th division teams.

Carling cup is for the 4 football league division teams.
