"Please excuse my grammer, as I am sure that there are at least 98 out of 100 of you checking that, and only 2 that read this message for content."

What about your spelling? Should we excuse that too?

Yes, please excuse my spelling of the word, and I will excuse the fact that you are one of the 98.

I am told that the rule about commas and periods inside quotation marks dates back to old-school typesetting, where if the comma or period was left to dangle on its own at the end, it was likely to break off and be lost altogether.

I don't know if there is any truth to this, but perhaps someone who, like me, enjoys the comfort of a logical explanation regardless of its truth will appreciate it.

I will not budge on the improper usage of quote as an
adjective. We have an adjective for that word, and it
should be used whether or not people use "quote" as an
adjective in common usage. That was a good catch with
adjectival, though, I guess I should have checked my
messgae one more time before I hit submit. And I doubt
anyone is taking this grammar checking war seriously.

Your definately not going to want to hear this from Sklanskly and I, but people take this stuff very serious.

(I cringed writing the above sentence.

(Sadly, many people can not spot the four errors in my first sentence.)

Well, obviously the whole issue was pure fun, however, the use of "quote" (rather than "quotation") as a noun, has become so common that I think the word "quotation" is soon going to go the way of the dodo. And, by the way, the word "quotation" is a noun, not an adjective, though it performs the function of an adjective in that context.

Consider: "Quote of the Day;" "Call for a free quote;" "We need a cop quote, as in they talk, you write, we print!" (The latter is from Ron Howards' The Paper, which accurately captures how journalists use the word.) In all three usages, the correct word would have been "quotation," but "quote" is what you'll hear far more often than not. *shrugs*

Language is dynamic.

LMFAO I'm glad me being lazy and not typing an apostrophe could start such a debate.

Luckily, there are many forums here at 2+2. This one has kind of disinegrated(sp?) into the place where people put weird stuff or argue over crap. However, I wouldn't advise that you leave, as there are many other forums here that all have solid poker discussion.
