Re: Nominations for Best \"Rock\" Album of 2005
[ QUOTE ]
[ QUOTE ] given that its the only objective way to judge something like this you have to take it into account. What makes the albums you listed good, and why should I believe that they are better than what the masses like? [/ QUOTE ] Attempting to objectify (is that a word?) appreciation of art through a direct correlation with popularity is comically retarded. [/ QUOTE ] you made a list of the 10 best rock albums of 2005 without including a single band that is widely popular. if this was CMI's 10 favorite albums of 2005 that would make sense, but its not. Note the 5 artists/bands you listed as the greatest of all time. What did they all have in common? the fact that they were all widely popular. It is the same in any art form. Those who are recognized as the greatest in their field are those who were most popular in their field. I agree that their is room for listing artists that are not so popular among the best, but to have a top 10 list not include any popular artist at all is as you would say "comically retarded". |

[ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] [ QUOTE ] This is my top 10 of 05 1. Architecture in Helsinki - In Case we Die 2. Clap Your Hands Say Yeah! - Clap Your Hands Say Yeah! 3. Sufjan Stevens - Illinois 4. The Fiery Furnaces - EP 5. The Decemberists - Picaresque 6. Bright eyes - Wide Awake, Its Morning 7. The National - Alligator 8. Bloc Party - Silent Alarm 9. Iron and Wine - Woman King 10. New Pornographers - Twin Cinema [/ QUOTE ] how have i never heard of any of these? if they were the best albums of 2005, why wouldn't i hear of them even one time? [/ QUOTE ] Because you are ignorant about good music? [/ QUOTE ] Don't you think where you live has alot to do with what you are exposed too, granted I can find all of these bands but if no-one in my region is listening to them then I have to be a disadvantage compared to a region where this kind of music is prevelant. [/ QUOTE ] dude, if you just casually read rolling stone or spin or EW or any of the national mags like that you would have heard about all of them. sufjan was #1 on one of their charts in the back for what, 3 months? unless you live in siberia or something, you really have no excuse other than a good old fashioned unwillingness to make any effort other than turning on a corporate radio station. [/ QUOTE ] I have heard of all of these, I personally just don't care for that most of them. I was just saying where you live plays a role. Nothing I listen too is played on the radio where I live. And I will add this album since noone else has because I think it deserves a mention: A bigger bang - Rolling Stones |

Re: Nominations for Best \"Rock\" Album of 2005
[ QUOTE ]
people who argue about music and try to tell other people their music 'sucks' and they are stupid for listening to it are idiots. music is all personal preference. how can someone be wrong for liking something like music? [/ QUOTE ] I agree it is "stupid" to criticize someone's tastes as people can listen and like whatever the hell they want, but if someone has a limited range of music they listen too, I can't respect their preferences for best artist or album of the year. Plus while music, like art, food, etc. is very subjective it doesn't mean you can't create a framework to judge its relative value overall, similar to art and food. |

This is, in all art forms, subject to the judgement of time. "Those who are recognized as the greatest in their field are those who were most popular in their field." LOL |

[ QUOTE ] Just because the masses like something doesnt make it good. And just because they dont, doesnt make it bad. [/ QUOTE ] given that its the only objective way to judge something like this you have to take it into account. There are reasons "critics" exist. They know more about the apreciation of art than the average joe. It's just the way it is. People have a hard time realizing that their opinion may not be as valid as someone elses. |

since we have the Murderer's Row of hipsters focusing on this thread, this might be a good time to ask the question that I've been pondering for a while why are the band names/album titles/song titles so gay nowadays? [/ QUOTE ] I'll offer this as exhibit A. Sufjan Steven's new album |
