Default Why I suck at MTTs

$3 at Stars.

Im on the Button with JJ

Two limpers to me and I raise to 80 (blinds are 10/20)
BB calls as do the limpers.

Flop(T330): 10 7 7 suits unimportant
Checked to me and I bet T175, BB check-minraises to T350 all fold and I call.

Turn (T1030): 2
BB bets 200, Hero is very confused.

These are by far my worst spots early in MTTs.

In a $3 tournament, it's hard to find a spot to fold an overpair. Since I wouldn't fold here, you're job is to get the money in the middle against the biggest range possible. This probably means pushing the flop.

He's probably only betting like 300 on the river, so if you are scared to go broke you could just call down, and you'd be left with around 700 if you lose. But I would definitely go broke against a 7 here.

Yea, I would get hurt against a 7 here too.

Do you remember if the BB has been calling raises from the blind very often? [img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img]

It's a $3 so he may well have a 7. However, the only draw has 6 outs vs. you (two that stack him for sure) and a T has 5 outs at most. Go ahead and call him down; you can even value bet when an ace hits the river and he checks.

I'm glad someone advocated calling down here. FWIW, I don't think pushing is awful (it is a $3 tourney), but I do think it's pretty bad. See the link I posted above for a reasonable explanation why.

He'll probly call with 88, 99, AT, or even KT. Those are the only hands I beat. I'm not sure how to do the math on which hands/combos there are and how many I'm ahead of but it seems like theres a lot more combos of hands with a 7 than there are of hands that he will call with that I am ahead of. Also I have to worry about TT, QQ, KK, and AA.

I called down and if he had bet more than 200 on the river I would have been folding.

after putting some 'thought' into this, and not just going with what my first instincts... pushing is pretty bad here, as the only thing is does that calling down doesnt is chase away hands that only have 5 outs on you.

so yea.. i was an idiot last night.
