The Iraqi govt is strong enough to survive after the US troops leave.

Certain groups such as the Kurds want the US troops to stay a LONG time. There will be a push by some Iraqi groups for the USA to establish a military base there. The reason are for security and financial. Afterall, if a US base can boost a local economy in the USA it can definately do it in a less wealthy country such as Iraq

It is not an accurate question because Iraq is only part of the larger picture. Victory will not just be a stable democratic government in Iraq, but also a situation where no nation dares harbour and support terrorists. If you only kill the rats in one buiding in a block but don't attend to the other buildings in the neighborhood, they'll be back real soon. And even when you clear the neighborhood, as the adage goes, the price of liberty is eternal vigilance.

He asked whether the question is fair, not whether it makes you uncomfortable.

This requires arming one of the sides so that they can brutally repress the other.

I did answer based on the fairness of the question because it isn't fair to try to separate out a part of an overall issue that is part of an integral whole.
