Default Taking notes in live play, feedback needed!

My question regards playing in person as opposed to online.

For feedback, please comment on how other players react to your note taking?

Thanks in advance for your input.

Mostly I write down my own financial info: cash in/out, chip stack on the hour (for calculating hourly SD later on -- yeah, I'm a nerd). I get good natured comments like, "So you brought your homework?" and people are usually really worried until they see it's not about them. Then they pretty much forget about it and limp in preflop every time they get two cards nine or higher (or any two suited).

If I were going to keep a notebook about opponents, I would wait until I got home -- that really would drive them away, I'm sure, or at least induce them to play better.

I write down net win or loss afterwards, but if you are talking about during play and tracking opponent tendencies, then hell no...

if you take notes in a home game please invite me so I can kick you in the nuts

I am considering taking notes, but I wouldn't feel comfortable taking notes on my opponents while at the game.

I was curious if there's any value to taking notes on my own play--e.g., help me plug holes in my game or see where my betting patterns are predictable.

It's good to know how you feel about taking notes in home games, though.

Regards

I've played some in a casino with a guy who took notes at the table. He claimed they were notes on himself, which I don't really doubt. He is pretty much considered a doofus.

If you play in a few venues and you see the same players a lot, it's a good idea to keep a "book" on them so you can remind yourself easily about them. However, I would not recommend taking notes about anything at the table itself. If you need to make a note, get up and walk away to do it.

Making notes will mark you and people will take shots because you're a "smart guy".

That's ring game. I have no opinion on tournaments.

Regards,

T

I take extensive notes on my own play live, but I just mentally note the hands as they happen, walk somewhere on a break and write them down away from the table.

Also financial reporting is a must, I also try to approximate # of hands played and table conditions for the session.
