If you had a Q, you wouldn't check raise the turn after betting the flop, you would continue to protect your hand on a drawy board. It's pretty unlikely the 4 helped you in anyway though maybe you had a hand like Q4 being in the SB, but it would be an odd hand to call a raise with.

All-in-all he's probably just a bad player; however, check-raising the flop was the place to make the move not the turn. I should also mention that for this to work he has to be able to fold a hand. You should have been able to observe from the hands he has been involved in before that this is not that kind of opponent.
