Default Vegas and the WSOP, I came, I saw, I broke even-trip report, too long

Prelim: As some of you know, we had a baby about 2 months ago so I had given up on any plans to go the WSOP this year. Then I won about $18k on the 29th in the super Wednesday. I mentioned to wifey there was a $3k limit event on Sunday. I was mostly dreaming, but she said she knows I’ve wanted to go, so go. So, I frantically transferred money, made reservations and filled out the forms nominating wifey for the “Wifey of the Year” award.

The trip: I flew in Saturday, July 2. I stayed at the Gold Coast, cause it was cheap and across the street from the Rio. I got in and called Irieguy to check in. He immediately invited me over for dinner. He picked me up, wined and dined me and introduced me to his wife and another friend we will refer to as creeper. During dinner I mentioned I had never played a live tournament so we decided to head down to the Palms and play in the $125 buy in they had at 10 pm.

76 players started. By the time we were down to 13 I was struggling along under 10 bb. I lost a hand and found myself at less than 3 bb. It was folded to me and I pushed 84s, called, sucked out. Next hand was folded to me and I pushed K8s, called, sucked out, and I was back in it. It came down to heads up between me and Irie. He made an offer to chop with me up about 2 to 1. He was laughing and smirking when he proposed it, so I honestly thought he was joking, and fired off some smart ass reply. Just to set the record straight, Irie treated me like family the whole trip, so, I woulda had no problem chopping. Very next hand had Irie doubling through me. We came to deal and ended it there for a $1900 score.

Playing live wasn’t really that much different accept for figuring pot odds. Unless you really kept track as money went in the pot it was just a guess how much was in it. Also the level of play was really fairly weak for a $100+ multi. It was about 2:30 am at this point and I had to play the in about 9 ˝ hours so I headed back to the room. Irie and creeper both bought 10% of me in the WSOP, and my dad did also, so I was going into the event for $2100. With the $1900 from the night before I was going into the event almost even.

The WSOP: I suck at sleeping before any kind of big event, so I logged maybe 4 hours sleep. I was pretty nervous, but my table had nobody I recognized, and after about a half hour I knew I was better than at least 5 players at the table. After that I calmed down and it was just another tournament. By 2 hours in I was the chip leader at my table. That’s when Pro Eli Elezra finally showed up for the tournament. The guy played about 50% of his hands and was winning everything. Buy the 4th hour he was the big chip leader at the table, but I was still 2nd with about 3 times ave.

From then on it was just a chip roller coaster ride. At one point I went from a high of 12000 down to about 3000, then back up to a high of about 21000. By now, about the 9th hour of play, the blinds were 400/800, stakes were 800/1600. I hit a couple bad hands and it was over. I reraised a steal position raise with JJ and called down on an A flop to lose to AJ, raised AQs and flopped second pair and the nut flush draw, no flush, K10 won. Raised 1st in from the small blind with 53s, threw in my few remaining chips with a flopped flush draw and it was done. I ended up busting about 65th out of 405, around 30 out of the money. I could have cashed in a last longer bet offered by Gigabet, but I’m pretty sure any bet that would have been interesting to him was way out of my financial league.

The convention hall the wsop was being held in was freezing. You didn’t notice it walking around, but after a few hours sitting at a table it was bad. I was dieing till raptor showed up and I had him buy me a sweatshirt. It kept me awake though. Playing one table live with no internet can be pretty boring. I wandered over in time to watch Raptor win $5000 in a satellite. Somehow the other guy had offended Raptor earlier, sow not only was there no chop, the guy had to experience losing to a kid that looked about 12 and said “ship it biach” with every pot. Obviously there was no handshake at the end.

The next day was the 4th of July and Irie invited me to a BBQ at Mcpherzen’s house. We ended up playing a 5 handed stt for $20 with me, Irie, Mcpherzen, Mcpherzen’s wife, creeper and some guy we will refer too as Fishboy. Well, Fishboy won, so the stakes were raised to $100 buy in, with the only sane player dropping out (Mcpherzen’s wife). At 10 pm we headed down to the Palms to play the $125 again. Irie was the only one to cash, taking 9th for $145.

The 5th I played some 2-5 NL at the Palms then played in the 7pm $230 + one rebuy with Microbob. We did a 25% share on each other and I ended up getting 2nd highest money of $4300 in an 8 way negotiated chop. I was in it $430 and gave Microbob his $975, so cleared about $2900.

The 6th I played the noon $230 + one rebuy with creeper with both of us busting out early. I went to the Pokerstars party with Microbob then hooked up with Raptor, Usher, Usher’s girl, and another girl that tagged alone. Raptor had an unfortunate roulette incident just before I got there so we all ended up going bowling. Bowling for the first time in 15 years with a carpel tunnel trashed hand was a real joy. By the time I drank enough for it not to hurt any chance at breaking 100 was long gone. Afterwards we played blackjack and craps for a few hours. Fun night and nobody arrested me for drinking and gambling with a group consisting almost entirely of fake ID’s.

I got back to my room about 9am and slept most of the day away. Played 15-30 at the Belagio that night and flew out at 6am Friday morning.

After all expenses were paid I ended up almost exactly even for the trip, got to play in the WSOP and had a great time.

Special thanks goes out to Irieguy. He really took me in and included me in his family and made the trip far more than it would have been otherwise. Another special thanks goes out to his wife for putting up with all of us.

BTW, might I add that I now have an unbeatable roulette system micro. Bet $100 each on Odd/3rd 12/middle 2to1/19 to 36, $300 on black, and yell SHIP IT when 35 black comes out paying a bajillion to 1 on your bets. I mean, it just can't lose right since it worked twice at the Rio ANDDDD Gold Coast.

Actually I only lost once the whole trip playing games that aren't poker-related. If you ask raptor and everyone else, I'm the biggest luckbox at video poker, wheel of fortune slots, $5 double diamond slots, craps, baccarat, blackjack, and roulette. I kept on parlaying the cash and winning pretty big. Nothing like going to the bathroom while eating at like 2am, stopping by the baccarat table, making 3 bets and getting our food comped for 4 people.

Edit: Now that I think about it, I'm 2/2 from "going to the bathroom" and playing baccarat while everyone else is eating.
