Axis and Allies. Spent much of my youth building up my infrantry at Kareila. It still is my favorite game of all time, including poker/video games/sports.

I picked up the revised version of this last Christmas, and brought it over my Dad's house. We had a blast replaying WWII (I gave him first choice, and he took Axis) one rainy afternoon while drinking some beers. Of course, being the neophyte he is, he did not know how to properly use Japan, and that proved to be his downfall.

Japan can be tricky. As can the UK and USA.

Some good discussions here (and since a person uses dice, one can use EV for making decisions, though I haven't seen any posters at these forums mention EV): Axis Allies Forums

I play Carcassonne (with several expansions) weekly. Great game with excellent "replayability".

I always assumed the optimal strategy with Japan was to ignore/delay the Pacific naval battle with the US, and instead concentrate on India/Asia, and draw Russia's attention from the Western front, enabling the Germans to take Caucus and the like. If Russia falls, the Allies are done.

I think Japan needs to take out the US navy pronto by attacking Hawaii. The US has the $$ to build transports/infantry, so I would knock any ships that might later protect those troops in crossing the Pacific.

India is a bit dangerous to attack but not out of the question. I prefer China, and sometimes, depending on my opponent, an attack of Africa to help Germany.

Japan is a tough to one play. Maybe the toughest.
