Default The Greatest Director of All Time?

The British mag 'Empire' just released a poll of the top 10 of all-time.

imdb link

1. Spielberg
2. Hitchcock
3. Scorsese
4. Kubrick
5. Ridley Scott (wtf?)
6. Kurosawa
7. Peter Jackson
8. Tarantino
9. Welles
10. Woody Allen

so sad.

there's no way this could have been a poll of anyone other than fans. no 'film person' in their right mind would rank QT, Peter Jackson, and Ridley Scott over Orson Welles, Woody Allen, and the 15 or so legends that didn't make the cut (Howard Hawks and Bergman say hello).

my favorite bit: "Surprisingly, acclaimed film-makers such as Star Wars director George Lucas, Charlie Chaplin, and Tim Burton, fell short of inclusion." ...Because Burton and Lucas are such legends, much better than that hack Woody Allen...

Kurosawa is the best director of all time, in my view.

Most of the great directors have a couple masterpieces. Kurosawa had 6.

Forgive my ignorance as I'm not a movie lover, but what has Peter Jackson done outside of LOTR?

exactly. he did some horror movies and "Heavenly Creatures", which is really good and happens to be Kate Winslet's first film.

basically, that's it.

Well heck, in that case, toss Coppola up there. After all, he was the director of The Godfather. Clearly he is the man.

You're right. Probably 15 year old LOTR dorks swaying the vote.

and Apocolypse Now. he should be higher than at least 2 people on that list, and probably 3.

Kubrick and Kurosawa are way too low. Not taking anything away from Spielberg's vision. But when you have a director take the genius vision of another director, and try to interpret it, "AI" happens.

Tarantino? Over John Ford or Billy Wilder? I wouldn't put him in the top ten of current directors, much less an all-time list.

Hitchcock and Kubrick should be 1 and 2.
