Should help them in the one run games. that and some regression to the mean will(should) put them right up there with the other two.

It was important for the jays to start signing good players after they got the television deal in Canada. Improving the pitching is key obviously, too bad no team in the AL East can make the playoffs because of the Yankees and Red Sox (unless some kind of miracle).

Am I the only person who thinks its crazy for them to pay that kind of money to a 29 year old who has been a closer for only a season? Yeah he was solid last year, but thats almost Rivera money they're giving him.

You're not the only one, but to say he was "solid" is like saying Angelina Jolie's breasts are decent. B.J. Ryan has been lights out for the last two years.

Anyone else a bit confused by the fact that his given name is Robert Victor?

I'm guessing it's Bob, Jr.

My given name is Darrel Paul but most call me DJ: Darrel, Jr.

Lights out for the past two years. Way better than average the year before that. Clearly the best "young" reliever on the market.

I don't mind the $, but I think 5 years is too long. If things go awry in Toronto, they will have a very hard time dealing that contract. I would have prefered 3 years and $30M.

Also, note the trend here. A lot of potential "bad" contracts. This is the most money ever awarded a reliever, and BJ Ryan is nowhere near the lock that Mariano Rivera was when he signed his contract. Look at the Cubs deals as well. Seems to me like a few teams have some extra money to shell out, and they are not necessarily doing it responsibly.

Can 29 really be considered young? I know that he could still be pitching in 10 years, but I think its a stretch call him a "young" reliever.
