Default Poker Software

In his book "Inside the Poker Mind," John Feeney claims that some poker software exists that can help beginners get a feel for the game without actually putting money into play.

I am curious if any of you have spent much time playing in such games simulated by the computer, and if so, was it helpful?

Although computer programming for chess has become so advanced as to be able to beat the best players, I have inherent doubt that the same is even remotely true for poker. However, at the micro limits, live players are often incredibly unpredictable anyway.

Does anyone have any thoughts on the usefulness of poker simulation software? Which specific program would you recommend, if any?
