I agree with everything you say in your post, but you ignore the primary reason for firing and re-firing here: getting TAG to fold his AK.

you dont need to fire and refire to get him to fold AK. Just bump it on the turn.

Here's my thinking on this hand. The maniac would bet any two cards on the flop and, given that it's 3-handed, the TAG could have a very broad range of hands. I want to get this hand heads up with the maniac as soon as possible. One way to get it heads up is to call the flop and raise the turn. The problem with that is that this would mean giving both of these guys a cheap turn card. So I raised the flop to see how the TAG would react. He cold-called and the maniac 3-bet. So what do I do now? I'm trying to get the TAG to fold, so I need him to believe that I have a big made hand. I could easily just call the maniac's 3-bet and raise the turn......except that people don't play a big made hand this way against a maniac. There's no reason to slow down ever because the maniac will just keep on pumping the pot regardless of what he has. So I capped, and the TAG called.

The turn was obviously my last chance to get the TAG out of there (I still thought there was a good chance I was ahead of the maniac), so I raised again. And even if I were behind to the maniac, I figured it wouldn't be too expensive because he was almost all-in anyway.

Unfortunately, the maniac had 44, so I lost.
