Default Clueless Player Blows Bad Beat

An amuzing incedent of player stupidity. Friday night, I was playing 2-5 spread limit at the Mountain High in Blackhawk, CO. Some commotion erupts at the table next to the one I was playing on. A player was standing up, yelling, obviously very upset. It turned out that the unhappy player had quads, and another player at the table had a straight flush.

This would have qualified for the bad beat jackpot except for one thing: There must be $30 in the pot. It seems that the player with the straight flush, who caught it on the turn (I'm not sure where the other player picked up the quads), called but didn't raise on both the turn and the river. He later said he didn't realize he had a straight flush.

Apparently he didn't think a straight or a flush (assuming he was aware that he had one of these) was good enough to raise. Of course, if I had had either the quads or the straight flush, I wouldn't have stopped raising until one of us was out of chips. A straight or flush should be good for at least one raise, even on a paired board. Absolutely amazing that you could have two hands that good in play and not get $30 in the pot in a 2-5 game.

That sounds pretty incredible. You can't blame the guy for being upset but he dug his own grave on this one.

This is one thing I REALLY hate about jackpots, they rely on the intelligence of the typical player. Doh. The typical player is a dullard idiot from hell who shouldn't be allowed to breed. And you're relying on them to act intelligently for your share of the bad beat jackpot.

So, did the moron with the straight flush get jumped in the parking lot?

This isn't the first time I've heard a story like this. My local B+M cardroom has a beat beat jackpot and there were two friends in the pot against one another that checked down the whole way with quads and a straight flush. Stupidity.

saw something similar at Canterbury -

it was the $100000 promotion - one person had KK one had AA - the flop came with an A and K I think and a K came on the turn or river

it was 2/4 - maybe 24 bucks in the pot.

Turns out the KK who got the bad beat had played less then 5 times and most all the table was new - it still counted, but for quads vs A's full of K's, I'd expect 10 bets on the river - I think they got one

No doubt. And in Detroit another rule that always worries me is the line that states any mention of the jackpot during the play of the hand can nullify the jakcpot hand. I would sue the casino if they took one away from me because some idiot not in the hand said something stoopid.

I'm not sure how much success you'd have. Casinos can take away the bad beat for a number of reasons and they are given increasing leeway in such matters. But it might be worth a try.

Last month, my buddy Sean was dealing in a game. Some kid flopped a set and got beat, and exclaimed, "Man, I can't believe the hands I'm getting beat with!! This time, I lose with a set. A few minutes ago, I lost with Aces Full..."

His buddy asked him skeptically, "When did you have Aces Full?"

"Just a few hands ago, when he made four kings. I had Aces full of kings."

If that were true, they'd've hit a $40,000 jackpot. So no one believed him.

The old guy next to the kid said, "Yeah, he had it. I saw 'em."

Sean went home early that day. He felt rather sick from that point on.

And you know that people mention it every single time at Greektown. And then the whole table hisses at them (including the dealer) while flashing the evil eye. Those greed heads at Greektown would love any excuse to deny you of big money.

I'm pretty sure that there is no minimum pot size at Canterbury.

I heard about one at Canterbury where a girl went all-in before the flop. Flop was AAx and she threw her hand away. It came running Kings, and she had pocket Kings. Quad Aces took the pot. She tossed the jackpot for absolutely no reason.
