I was expecting MUCH better.

Maybe that's why you thought the piece wasn't as good. I wasn't expecting much which is probably why I really liked the piece.

Default Re: Poker story on 60Minutes Wednesday

my expectations don't really have much to do with my opinion in the end.

I've gone to movies/concerts or seen TV pieces where I was expecting something really good....and sometimes I say "wow....I was really disappointed" (ex: the 60 Minutes piece, PSI II coverage and the movie Sin City) and there have been other times I've said "wow...it even exceeded my already lofty expectations" (the poker coverage of PSI 1 on NBC on super-bowl sunday was even better than I was expecting for example).

It just wasn't a very good piece.

The fact that it was on 60 minutes is somewhat helpful....but I really think they could have done better to analyze the phenomena of the 'poker-explosion'. I've read some articles that have done a good job of this..and some articles that did a lousy job of it.

The 60 minutes piece made it into the lousy category.

The effect that the 60 minutes piece will have on online-poker play will be virtually nil.

I think the NBC HUC coverage might have a chance to further the popularity though.
As well as the additional ESPN coverage that they show over and over such as the 2004 USPC and the upcoming WSOP-circuit events (as well as the WSOP itself)

Putting Dan Rather in a ball-cap and sunglasses does not help a whole lot.
The fish aren't going to come flocking to party and stars because of this piece.

Something like this could actually help Pokerstars overtake PartyPoker. Will be interesting to see.

Wait...you telling me those Moneymaker/Raymer commercial spots aren't doing the job?

[/ QUOTE ]

Har har.
Yeah...those commercials really are pretty mediocre (at best).
For national TV spots with 2 world-champions they really should find a better ad-agency/production group.

You should have seen the spots that ran locally in Memphis a few mnths after Moneymaker won the WSOP.
They have Chris Moneymaker sitting at a really cheap looking poker table in the 1 seat. He's heads-up against some guy in the 10-seat. The announcer says something like 'This is it. World Champion Chris Moneymaker is going All-in!!' (Moneymaker shoves in some cheap looking chips).
'And he's got Aces!!' (cut to the other guy's flipped over cards which are KK...then cut to table which shows ace hitting on river).
'And that's it. Chris Moneymaker wins another championship. What a GREAT MOVE!!'

Then Moneymaker...still seated at the table...looks up at the camera, "And here's another great move. You can get 3 shirts and 3 ties for $79.99 at any great Kenneth Men's Clothing location."

(remembering the commercial as best I can...this account was pretty close...couldn't remember the name of the store though)

It was cheesy and terrible and I only saw it a few times. I really wished I had taped it because it was SOOOOO bad.
I sure hope they hooked up Chris with a REALLY nice suit for taking part in such a BAD commercial.

Hijack alert, but I'm shocked at this statement at a movie that so perfectly captured the marvelous world Frank Miller has created. Everyone is obviously entitled to their opinion but it's so ... shocking ... to be reading along and then stumble upon something so ... shocking.

Back on topic: yes, the special was a snoozefest.

(Sin City ruled, however.)

I didn't get to see the piece but I wanted to offer this. Does anyone really think that the 60 minutes Wed. edition demographic is our target Joe 6-pack dream player. I'm not sure that 60 minutes is the right vehicle to bring in your average guy. That said, it can't hurt.

Silly fluff, that show. I guess it's better than bad press.

Default Re: Poker story on 60Minutes Wednesday-$5K/day???

Did the female player at the beginning really say she wins $5K a day???? lol

We didn't have the sound turned up that high and I caught a big rush in my game at that point, but did she say anything about the limits, games, casinos, sites, for how long etc that she plays? Anybody catch her name?

It said her goal was 5K a day. She seemed like a complete joke to me, and a horrible person to represent poker players.
