Default Laptop + External DVD RW drive

I have a Dell Inspiron 8600 with a regular dvd drive in it (i'm dumb and didn't spend the extra hundy on the upgrade). If I get an external dvd-rw drive, would I be able to put one of my dvds in my Inspiron and put a blank dvd in the external to make a back-up?

I don't know much about this, so any help would be appreciated.

also, which DVD's would be the best to use for this?

thanks,
-WW

*it sounds like it would work, almost sounds too simple. I just wanted to come here and clarify before I go spend money on it.

Well, you can burn DVDs but AFAIK the pressed DVDs we buy hold more information that the ones we can burn. check out doom9.org for all your DVD backup questions.

You can get dual layer burners, but the blank dual layer DVDs are still a good bit more expensive than single layer DVDs.

Im not to sure what our rules are on this board via piracy and so on so I cannot go into details but if I were you I take notes because the next 3 things I post are important:

1.GOOGLE - Can be your very best friend
2.DVDSHRINK - Used to copy original DVDs
3.NERO 6 ULTRA - Software used to make the copies
