Wilma is a Bitch...What would you do?
Hurricanes suck. My mom got all freaked out about this damn thing that may not even hit here and at who knows what strength if it does. How long before people forget Katrina and stop worrying before they have to?
So anyway she calls the wife, and offers to fly the wife and kids to Texas for a few days. I can't go because of work. So I'll probably be stuck sitting at home by myself all weekend, possibly with no electricity if it hits. It will also likely be flooded, downed trees, most public places closed, etc. I'll probably follow [censored]'s lead and make a trip to the bookstore this afternoon. I'm looking for some good fiction. Not pop stuff and no sci-fi, more serious stuff. Recommendations welcome. What would you do stuck at home, in the house for a weekend by yourself with no electricity? edit: This has become a "suggestions for Jake" thread. I was really hoping for more discussion of what you would do personally. |

Re: Wilma is a Bitch
After going through a 24 hour evacuation I would stay home too. Probably one of the worst events of my life.

Re: Wilma is a Bitch
Jake, if you like mysteries w/ some meaning, check out Dennis Lehane; start with A Drink Before The War.
Also, stock up on beer and porn mags. |

I'm not sure what I'm looking for. I used to read lots of mysteries, but was lookign for something more serious. The beer will of course be bought. My favorite porn is on the laptop, and it's got an extra battery. |

I've been recommending this book a lot. I enjoyed it.
William Gibson is known for dark future sci-fi. But this book is more about society and global marketing. Gibson: All Tomorrow's Parties. It'll make you think. And you'll have a tough time putting it down once it gets going. |

No electricity? Head to the bar. [/ QUOTE ] This is an excellent suggestion, but as I said, they'll likely also be powerless and flooding may prevent it. |

Where are you, and what's the probability of being hit by Wilma?
You gotta play hurt • Dan Jenkins Good, funny book The Eagle Has Landed • Jack Higgins I assume you've either read this already or have seen the movie. If not, highly recommended. |

[/ QUOTE ] Miami, and the cone is pretty wide at this point. This was really intended to be more of a hypothetical thread about what people would do if it hit. Dan Jenkins is great and it's been awhile since I read any of his...Semi Tough, Dead Solid Perfect and Life Its Own Self. Good suggestion. I've read The Eagle Has Landed about a dozen times. I've read everything Higgins has ever written (including his pseudonyms) except the ones in the last couple of years or so. He's kinda lot his touch imo. |

Re: Wilma is a Bitch...What would you do?
Jake screw books go get yourself a generator, if the hurricane does hit your town then FEMA will pay you back whatever you spend for it.
On a side note I have been in Beaumont for past two weeks and I would not have wanted to be there when Rita went through. |
