definatly not since a particular post was checked because ones you have never looked at show less that the total number of posts on that topic.

When you return later the number of posts not marked as "read" is the number you see in red. Edit: Hm, or maybe I'm wrong. Seems that some posts I've never read actually have a lower number. Weird.

It is the number of new posts to a thread since you last read that thread OR since you last closed internet explorer. Also, sometimes it gets goofy.
