Default drawing to the nuts w/ nothing else

open question to close off one of my major leaks:

lately i have been pissing away bets on nut flush/straight draws...how do you treat the 8 and 9 outers when you don't even hit bottom pair to go with them? last night i handed over at least half a rack with hands like ATs betting into two-flush rag flops and losing to sixes, sevens, etc. even with a big pot odds overlay, 4-to-1 is still 4-to-1...novice play admittedly, but check/call mode seems to give the show away, not to mention the stack...

general approach? draw + overcards at least to be aggressive? middle pair?

First of all, its not clear you are doing anything wrong. You might just be getting unlucky. Second, if you never try a semi-bluff checkraise or turn raise with hands like these you probably should. I think a healthy combination of check/calling, betting, and raising is the way to go with big draws. What % of the time you do which depends on the game and your opponents.
