Default Card Rooms in Minneapolis?

It looks like I'll be flying up to Minneapolis (actually, the office is in Bloomington and I'll likely be staying very close to there on thursday night) next friday for a job interview and was curious if there are any cardrooms in town? I googled and found several casino's (some very nice!) but none had any info on poker rooms.

I'll be able to set my iternary next week and want to see if it's worth staying the night to play somewhere.

Thanks in advance!

Canterbury Park

It's about a 10 minute drive from Bloomington.

ah, thanks - I thought I had remembered folks talking about that place but wasn't sure it was in Minneapolis.

That's cool though - checked the map and looks like I'll be staying an extra night!

Any regulars care to comment on the game selection?

I'm far from a regular, having been there three times, but have one very important pointer. Arrive as early as possible, especially on weekend nights. The waits for a table can be horrific.

The previous poster was right about the rediculous wait times.... I can garantee the 2/4, 3/6 and 4/8 games are extremely soft and ive heard the 6/12 and 8/16 games are pretty soft as well. For 15/30 and 30/60 i think it depends on the day and time, and i guess which regulars are in the game.

I don't know what type of limit player you are so I'll give you the rundown -

2/4 and 3/6 - super long waitlists, esp on weekends. Can easily be 3 or more hours. Great games. Esp the 2/4. Everyone seeing the flop isn't uncommon. The rake/jackpot drop/dealer toking makes the game almost unbeatable, though.

4/8 - seems to be a little more hit or miss. Players are real loose now but getting a little more aggressive. Not quite as loose thouhg. I'd definately play this game over 3/6 as it's probably better with the rake being proportionately less.

6/12 - often the best limit in the house for the average decent player to make some money at. The rake is 5% as apposed to 10% at the games above and the players are still pretty bad. Instead of random players playing it's often many of the same regulars and almost all of them are far too loose and not agressive enough.

8/16 - similar to 6/12 except sometimes the game is a little tougher. Occaisionally a tough game. Sometimes a GREAT game. Really hit or miss. This games regulars are LAG's.

15/30 - hit or miss as well but more often than not a great game...also more often a good game than the 8/16 I think. You'll start running into some ok players but most of them still play far too loose and far too passive. A pretty easy game for anyone with any poker skills.

30/60 - I've only sat in it once but from what I hear extremely hit or miss. Some hands are 7 ways for 2 or 3 bets and others are just HU matches with a raiser and the blind(s).

If you have any questions pm me as I'll probably forget to check back to the thread.

oh and the wait lists for the games 4/8 and up are significantly shorter.

I live in Bloomington and I drive pretty fast. It takes me about 16 minutes to get to Canterbury when there's no traffic, and it should take at least 20 from the airport.

Cool! Thanks for all the info.

I'll probably be playing in the 8 or the 15 game.

Playing 2/4 live regardless of how 'good' the game is just doesn't do much for me.

I play at canterbury about once a week although I havent played there in the last two months (I am trying to quit smoking and that is the only place where I was falling off the wagon).

Thursday nights they have a limit tourney which starts at 730 I think. You should be able to get on a table pretyy quick jsut after the tournament starts. Tables will be open all night as tournament tables braekdown.

On Friday and Saturday get there late afternoon if possible. If you get there after six you may have a long wait. I' typically play the 6-12 on weekends, the games are usually loose and fairly passive. The weekend 8-16 games can be loose and mindlessly agressive. There are some very good players at that limit. If the jackpot is up there, a lot of regular 15-30 players will play 8-16.

I may be out this weekend to see if I can play without wanting a cigarete. I seem to be able to play on the internet without craving one. If I see Sucka on the board I will look you up.
