raise the flop, bet the turn ... building a pot will make it easier to get your stack in, rather than praying for a bad overcall

Yeah...That's amazing that he still called your river bet. Raise the flop, I don't see how the jack could have helped him. Checking the turn is too obvious and a pot sized bet would do best here. Then on the river another pot sized bet should have him all in.
